Waldgarten

I made these illustrations for my friend Stephan Lehmann’s Waldgarten research project. Waldgarten means “forest garden”, a kind of mixed agriculture that feature a diversity of crops, including trees. The mixed nature of a Waldgarten supports greater soil diversity and nutrient cycling than monoculture, and reduces the crops’ susceptibility to pests. Stephan is studying the productivity and effectiveness of different Waldgarten concepts, which include various combinations of trees, vegetables, wheat and grain crops, and the rotation of cows and chickens in order to provide natural fertilizer.
